The registered CDM project activity “ESTRE Pedreira Landfill Gás Project” (EPLGP) encompasses the collection and destruction/utilization of landfill gas (LFG) generated at the landfill named Centro de Disposição de Resíduos Pedreira (CDR Pedreira landfill). This well-managed landfill is owned and operated by the host-country project participant CDR Pedreira – Centro de Disposição de Resíduos Ltda. and it is located in the city of São Paulo, the capital city of the State of São Paulo. Modern engineering has been applied in the construction and operation of the landfill, with all the pertinent Under the initial project design, the purpose of the project activity was to promote reduction of emissions of the greenhouse gas (GHG) methane (CH4) uniquely through efficient collection and destruction of LFG generated at the CDR Pedreira landfill by flaring (in a set of high temperature enclosed flares). Since September 2021, as a result of a permanent change in its design configuration1, a relevant share of collected LFG has been utilized as gaseous fuel for electricity generation in an electricity generation infrastructure (encompassing 2 engine-generator sets + all required ancillary equipment and systems) fueled uniquely by LFG and with total combined nameplate power generation capacity of 3.096 MW. Regular operation of the project’s electricity generation infrastructure was initiated on 16/09/2021. As a result of the implementation of the project activity, the operation and management of the CDR Pedreira landfill have not changed when compared to the situation prior to the implementation of the project activity, and it is not expected to change during the 3 rd crediting period of the project activity either. Since the implementation of the project’s electricity generation infrastructure in September/2021, the project activity has also promoted GHG emissions reductions due to the generation of electricity from unconventional renewable energy sources (in addition to GHG emission reductions due to the destruction of methane (in the high-temperature enclosed flares and in the engine-generator sets)).
