The Emission Reductions through Recycling project is the first Gold Standard-certified project in Europe to generate plastic offset credits by reducing CO2 emissions through large-scale plastic recycling. Based in Romania, the project recycles post-consumer plastic waste that would otherwise be landfilled or incinerated, significantly lowering emissions compared to the production of virgin plastic. Over its 1-year crediting period (2017-2026), the project will avoid around 453,800 tons of CO2 emissions, with an annual average reduction of 45380 tonnes CO2. This climate benefit dramatically reduces greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and the environmental burden of raw material extraction. Moreover, the project annually recycles a quantity of approximately. 52081 tons of plastic material. By generating verified plastic offset credits, the project directly supports sustainable plastic waste management and enables companies to meet their plastic neutrality and carbon reduction targets. Beyond emission reductions, the project delivers broad positive impacts across 10 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-from promoting responsible production and consumption to supporting clean energy use, improving local working conditions, fostering innovation in recycling technology, and advancing public health, economic inclusion, and community development.
